2025 Authorities

A primary focus of the Archnet is the development of the urban environment in Muslim societies. Archnet’s new place authorities are city records, published and unpublished, that link together the sites, publications, and media relating to a specific city, making it possible for users to more easily find these resources.&nbsp;These records will facilitate finding materials relating to a specific city even if they search by variant, alternate, or old names.&nbsp;City records published in this collection provide brief descriptions and histories of the place. They are linked to related publications, sites, and media, including general views or cityscapes.&nbsp;We hope you find these records useful. Taqah 

This collection contains images of various sites in Oman which have been scanned from negatives housed in three binders in the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/123" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mohamed Makiya Archive</a> (Negative Binders 21-23). The images mostly document locations in and around <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/3823" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Muscat</a>, including <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/4374" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mutrah</a> and Sidab. Locations further afield that appear in these binders include Sohar, <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/4147" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Nizwa</a>, and Salalah. The images include close views of buildings and architectural details, as well as streetscapes, seascapes, and landscapes. Both historic and contemporary buildings of variable condition are featured. The images were most likely created in the 1970s when <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/398" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Makiya Associates</a> was engaged in various projects in Oman, including a survey of Muscat and proposals for architectural preservation and development. The Aga Khan Documentation Center thanks <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/11798" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shaima Al Senaidi&nbsp;</a>for providing identifications for several locations documented in these binders, and Bridget Peak for providing further location identifications and item-level metadata for the photographs in this collection and associated site records.

Burj al Askar is comprised of three defensive watchtowers elevated north of the town of Taqah. It served as a residence for the guards or soldiers of the governor (wali) who was in residence at the nearby Taqah Castle. The house of the late Sheikh Salem bin Faraj Koofan is now the Koofan Heritage House. It is a typical three-story merchant’s house in Taqah, Oman designed in the regional architectural style of Dhofar. It is constructed of limestone and wood beam ceilings, incorporating elaborate windows and doors of imported wood, evincing the high socioeconomic status of the original owner’s trading business. Builty as the residence of Sheikh Ali bin Timman Al Ma’shani, during the reign of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal (r.1913-1932), the structure, known as Taqah Castle, became the administrative center and residence for the local governor (wali) presiding over the region; in the 1960s, its outer wall and defensive watchtowers were added to defend the wali. It served as the private residence of the wali until 1984. In 1991, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture renovated the structure, and in 1994 it was reopened as a museum.&nbsp; The Taqah Castle is built of stone and is two-stories; its defensive intent is evinced in its three watchtowers. The first floor features a reception hall (barza), guard’s room, weapon’s storage and prison, and the second floor housed the living quarters for the wali and his family, including a children’s room and business suite.
