1959-62 Survey Called the East Gate at the Dargāh of Rūshan-i Cirāgh-i Dihlī. Located in the western outskirts of Cirāgh Delhi village. Grid ref. H-12This is a building with a dome, a square plan, and entrances on the east and west. Inside, the two sides of the passage running east-to-west are raised higher. The building is now painted and has undergone many repairs and alterations. Above the east entrance of the gate, there is an inscription with the name of the Tughluq Dynasty Sulṯān, Fīrūz Shāh, and the year 775 A.H. (1373-74 A.D.), but it is now completely concealed with white paint. It has an interior diameter of approximately 6m, openings on the east and west sides, and the exterior walls are inverted. The centres of all four sides protrude, and the arches are surrounded by a U-shaped frame. A crown ornament surrounds the wall and octagonal drum, and the dome is placed on top. Turrets stand on both sides of the protruding part of the east facade. Inside, the east-west aisles have high bases, with recesses on the north and south. Squinch arches form the octagon, and cubic corbels form a 16-agon, with the circle forming the dome. The inside of the squinch arch is a curved surface on four corbels (alternating cubic corners and rectangular beams), and a small arch frame is segmented into the wall below the squinch arch. 1959-62 Survey Called Dū Sīṛhīyā Gumbad. Located approximately 800 m west of the Tomb of Humāyūn, about 50 m south of Lodī Road. Grid ref. I-9This is a domed building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west interior wall, and entrances on the other three sides. On the east exterior wall, traces of oriel windows can be seen on either side of the entrance; on the inside of the entrance, there are two staircases leading up to the windows. The popular name Dū Sīṛhīyā Gumbad (Domed Building with Two Staircases) probably comes from this feature.This building is now used as a residence, but traces of one tomb can still be seen. It is a wall-type dome building with openings on three sides, with a mihrab on the west. [Exterior] The centers of all four sides protrude. On the east side, a bay window is located within a frame surrounding the opening. The central protrusion is slightly higher than the sides, and beams and columns are used within the arch at the opening. A crown ornament surrounds the wall and drum, and a bell-shaped dome is placed on top, with large lotus petals at the top. [Interior] Squinch arches form an octagon, which is then completed by 16 arches to form a 16-agon, with the dome resting on an even lower series of 32 arches. Arches are cut on both sides of the opening arch. Arches of the same height are used for the mihrab, with a segmented arch at the top center. The arches and spandrels have large medallions and are decorated with reliefs. When converting from a square to an octagon, or from an octagon to a 16-gon, corbels made of overlapping cubes are used on both ends of the semi-dome of the mihrab. 1959-62 Survey Called the Bā'olī Southwest of Mihrawlī. Located approximately 300 m southwest of Mihrawlī village. Grid ref. F-13This bā'olī (step-well) is located near the northeast corner of the graveyard in the southwest of Mihrawlī village. It is mostly in ruins. There are traces of a rectangular tank to the northeast of the round well, but otherwise its overall appearance is unknown. Period III (?)IOC: IX-73; cf. ASI.III-111 メへローリー西南のバーオリーとよぶ。メヘラウリー部落の西南約300メートルにある。附図.F-13メへラウリー部落の西南にある墓地の東北隅に近く,ほとんど崩壊している。円井戸の北東に長方形のタンクのあとがうかがわれるほか,その全貌はよくわからない。第Ⅲ期(?)。東研.Ⅸ-73;cf.ASI.Ⅲ-111 2015-18 Survey This is located outside the wall surrounding G1, north of its east gate. In 1959-62, there was a rectangular tank to the northeast of the round well, but this could not be found today. 1959-62 Survey Called Dam II of Tughluqābād. Located approximately 200 m south from the southeast part of the outer wall of `Ādilābād Fort. Grid ref. J-14Dam II is in a location with similar topographical features as Dam I, and also runs in the north-south direction, but it is considerably smaller, with a length of approximately 80 m. The central part of the dam has completely fallen; the surface of the other parts has mostly collapsed, except for an extremely small part where there is stonework much like Dam I. It is presumed that this dam too originally had a sluice or similar facility, but there are no traces at all remaining. The date of construction, its purpose and functions can be thought to be the same as those of Dam I. The mosque at Ouara, capital of the OuaddaI Sultanate, was constructed with red brick. The exterior walls are nearly 1 m thick and form a square measuring 27 x 27 m. The prayer hall is divided into seven 2.4 m wide aisles by five rows of rectangular double pillars. Constructed in the 17th century, some rectangular baked bricks at the site are imprinted with the Hijri date 1211 (1796) and the symbols of the brick-makers, suggesting that part of the mosque was renovated at the end of the eighteenth century. The qibla wall faced directly east. A mihrab niche protruded from the center of the wall and a hexagonal minaret, originally 12 m tall, from the northern end. 1959-62 Survey Called Dam I of Tughluqābād. Located in one corner of the hilly area spreading south of `Ādilābād Fort, approximately 600 m south of the Tomb of Ghiyāth al-Dīn Tughluq. Grid ref. J-14This dam is constructed more or less in the north-south direction to block a valley deep in the hills. The central part has now fallen but the stonework on either side is still well-preserved; it is thought that the structure originally was over 200 m long. The stonework of the dam is crude compared to that of nearby forts like Tughluqābād and `Ādilābād. It is presumed that the collapsed central part originally had a sluice or similar facility, but no traces remain today.It is difficult to determine the date, purpose, and functions of this dam, but it was probably part of a large-scale water supply project for the vast flatlands south of Tughluqābād Fort. It can be thought to have been built around the same period as, and in connection with, Dam II of Tughluqābād and `Ādilābād Fort Dam. By damming the rainwater in the valley to its southeast, Dam I can be presumed to have prevented flooding of the flatlands during the rainy season and provided irrigation to farmlands in drier seasons. 1959-62 Survey Called the Dam at Station Road. Located approximately 120 m further along Station Road, which leads from Parade Road to Cantonment. Runs more or less in the north-south direction. Grid ref. E-9This dam is currently disrupted by Station Road; its southern section eventually bends east and then south again. In this southern section, there is a structure of broken stone and stucco clearly remaining, but not one sluice remains. The north side of the road is covered by a jungle; this section of the dam is badly ruined, and the sluice located approximately 100 m from the road has mostly collapsed. The sluice has water openings running in the east-west direction, but now only two small outlets are visible at two different levels in its south part. On the east side of the sluice is a modern semi-circular barrier that guards the sluice. Immediately to the south of the sluice is a structure adjoining the dam thought to be from the same period, but it is now completely in ruin, except for the entrance and part of the wall. Its original state is unknown, but can be thought to have been used by the ruling classes during hunting and other recreational activities. 1959-62 Survey Called the `Ādilābād Fort Dam. Located north of the eastern part of `Ādilābād Fort and south of the southeastern part of Tughluqābād Fort. Grid ref. J-13This dam is approximately 120 m wide and 300 m long, and connects `Adilābād Fort and Tughluqābād in the north-south direction. The stonework on the southeast is part of the outer wall of `Ādilābād Fort, and in fact the dam can be seen as an extension of the fort's outer district. The dam is unlike Dams I and II in that it is much more large-scale; further, the characteristics of the stonework on the eastern surface, as well as the bastions and battlements, mirror the appearance of the walls of the two forts.This dam forms the main structure of the large-scale water supply project planned for the vast flatlands between Tughluqābād Fort and the hilly lands south of `Ādilābād Fort, and its main role can be presumed to be water storage in the flatlands. In the north part of this dam, there is a sluice for releasing water to the east and adjusting the water flow as necessary. The purpose and functions of this dam and its sluice must be examined from many angles, in relation to issues regarding the large-scale water project and the development of the two forts and surrounding areas. The designs above the miḥrāb, and the numerous circle designs flanking the arches inside the tomb room, are the salient features of this building. 1959-62 Survey Called the Chillā of Niẕām al-Dīn Auliyā. Located near the northeast corner of the wall surrounding the Tomb of Humāyūṇ, outside the north wall. Grid ref. I-9This is an east-facing building three bays wide and one bay deep, with a cross-vaulted ceiling and a flat roof. On the far wall of the central room, there is an opening that leads to the rooms beyond. Traditionally this place is known as the place where Shaikh Niẕām al-Dīn Auliyā carried out his religious activities, but it is unclear whether this is true. 1959-62 Survey Round well that was called Cāh-i Khāṣ. Located west of the Green Park residential area, to the north of the road leading from Mihrawlī Road to Ḥauẓ Khāṣ. Grid ref. G-11This well is now completely collapsed and buried; only part of the stonework on the north side remains. It is presumed from this small part that the outside of the round well had twelve sides. Originally this well had a marble inscription with the name of Sikandar Shāh, a sulṯān from the Lodī Dynasty, and the year 915 A.H. (1509 A.D.), but the inscription is now preserved in the Red Fort Museum. The palace was built in the early fifteenth century in the mysteriously undocumented Arab-African city of Gedi, which was abandoned in the sixteenth century. It is still uncertain whether the royal family inhabiting the palace may have been related to, or in competition with, the sheikh of nearby Malindi. The palace covers an area of about a quarter acre in the northwest quadrant of the city and, like many of the houses in Gedi, is constructed almost entirely of red earth mixed in with the coral rag and lime dug from its site. Palm frond roofing, or makuti, originally covered most of its rooms, until its walls were reinforced at a later date to support a permanent lime concrete roof. The palace is made up of multiple courts connected by series' of rooms, all enclosed within a walled precinct. It is divided into two main sections, comprising the main quarters of the palace to the south and the slightly smaller annex, built later, to the north. The courts that cover two-thirds of the palace served as receiving spaces, and were sunken so as to allow for the enjoyment of longer cooling shadows. Entry to the palace is from the east through a doorway raised two feet off the ground and accessible via a flight of steps. These steps are flanked on either side by six-foot long benches and are adjoined to the north by a tomb built into the gateway corner enclosed with shallow walls. The doorway is composed of five nestled archways, like the gateway of the Great Mosque at Gedi, and has a pediment carved with eight square niches. It leads into the first of the sunken courtyards, known as the reception court. Like all other courtyards of the palace, and the streets of the town, the reception court has coral-covered drains dug into the floor, through which rainwater sift and return to groundwater. To the south of the reception court is a walled court with a large well that was probably used for washing clothes. A passageway leads north from the reception court to the audience court, and also connects to the major east-west corridor that runs parallel to the audience court. This semi-public corridor separates the main quarters of the palace from the annex to the north, and is also entered separately from a doorway beside the major palace entrance. Measuring sixteen meters by seven and a half meters, the sunken audience hall has platforms on its south, east and west sides, and steps along its east and west sides. A bench on the eastern platform is thought to be the sitting area of dignitaries and palace judges. Between the audience court and the reception court, is a cluster of four rooms, one of which is a lavatory. The lavatories in Gedi often had two small cubicles with a meter high separation; one cubicle has a deep square pit and the other a platform for two bowls and a divided seat, used as a bidet. The southern half of the palace is a grid of rooms interconnected in ways that define numerous access paths, and three courts - the domestic court along the southern wall of the palace, another large court with a baobab tree at the southwest corner of the palace and the small women's court that abuts the audience hall to the west. The whole section covers a square area of about two hundred and seventy square meters. A block of interconnected rooms are accessed from three doorways on the south wall of the audience hall. Entered through two of these doors, the first room is about three times wide as long and has a 3.3 meter tall ceiling. Doors flanked by niches for lamps open into two adjoining rooms, which lead further inward to two smaller rooms. These rooms, like many of the rooms in the palace have walls dotted with pegs from which carpets were hung. Between these two inner rooms is a safe that was only accessed via a trap door in the upper portion of the wall. This central core of seven rooms are connected to additional rooms to the east and are flanked by a domestic court to the south that leads from the eastern rooms to the women's quarters located to the west. Both sections were probably built at a later date. The eastern rooms were most likely used for storage and are clustered around a large court with a baobab tree. Rooms in the western women's section terminate at the small women's court. Some blocked doors here imply that this section was later subdivided into smaller rooms of unknown purpose. The sunken women's court has a large jar built into the southeast corner and a bench and shelf along the north wall, which at one time also had a doorway leading to the annex court. The domestic court before the women's quarters was probably used as a kitchen and has a small well. A small room leading from the domestic court to the women's quarters contained a buried ceramic jar (mafingo), which served to protect the house from evil spirits; mafingo were also excavated in other locations throughout the palace. To the northwest of the corridor bisecting the palace are a cluster of tombs, which are separated from the palace annex to the northeast by a court six meters across. One of the mysteriously uninscribed tombs is topped with a hexagonal pillar which was once ornamented with porcelain bowls, and another had a red ochre coral boss, with an interlace motif similar to those at Mnarani and Mombasa, that has since fallen. The annex, probably built later in the later fifteenth century, may have expanded women's quarters. Four apartments, each with an inner room, outer room and lavatory, are joined to four open courts. A fifth apartment, with an open verandah, may have served as a royal shop as at the Palace of Husuni Kubwa in Kilwa, Tanzania. A small room at the center where a mziga, or horned stove, was found was likely used as a kitchen. One of the courts of the annex seems to have been undergoing re-plastering, indicated by a pile of mortar, when the palace and the town of Gedi was abandoned at the end of the sixteenth century. In 1948 excavations began at the town of Gedi and in 1984 the site was declared a National Park. A museum close to the excavated ruins houses archeological finds such as Chinese and Islamic porcelains, glass and shell beads, gold and silver jewelry, coins and local pottery. 1959-62 SurveyLocated approximately 500 m west-northwest of Munīrka village. Grid ref. E-11This is a domed building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west, and entrances on the other three sides. No tombstones can be verified as the building is currently used as a barn by farmers, but ASI writes of four tombs. This building is characterized by the designs and inscriptions covering the miḥrāb inside and the wall surfaces surrounding it, as well as by the decorative cross vaulting on the exterior of the dome. It stands upon a high plinth encircled by blind arches and underground rooms. The west side of this plinth is a wall mosque with fifteen miḥrābs, side walls, and turrets on each end as well as on each side of the central miḥrāb. This tomb is said to have been called Baṛā Lao kā Gumbad. There is another plinth adjoining this plinth to the south, on which a domed tomb structure stands. The drum's top ornament is multi-lobed, with tiles remaining in some areas. The exterior is finished in stucco, and the exterior dome also has a linear pattern of intersecting arches carved into it, likely with tiles inserted. [Interior] Squinch arches form an octagon, followed by 16 arches to form a 16-sided polygon, with the dome resting on five layers of bands. The dome's star-cross pattern uses arches perpendicular to the dome, as in T33. The west side, which has a central medallion and teardrop-shaped medallions inserted outside the star, forms a mihrab at the height of the squinch arch, and an arch is also inserted below the springing point. Three tombs can be found inside the building. The small six-pillared chahatri atop the dome is an unusual feature. Nearby residents are said to have called the building the Bāndī (Female Servant) Gumbad or Potī (Granddaughter) Gumbad, with respect to the larger tomb structure lying to its west. 1959-62 Survey Located approximately 900 m south of Quṭb Mīnār. Grid ref. F-13This is a domed building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west, and entrances on the other three sides. There are oriel windows on either side of the south entrance. The miḥrāb inside is surrounded by inscriptions and decorative designs. The lower part of the building is now buried in the earth and is used as a residence. In 1959-62, the south side was closed, but it is now open. There is filler in the stonework, and surfaces were covered with stucco during repairs. 1959-62 Survey Located approximately 300 m south-southwest of Zamrudpur village. Grid ref. I-11This is a domed building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west, and entrances on the other three sides. There is a window on each side of the miḥrāb and all the entrances. On all sides, there appear to have been eaves in the centre; it is unusual that the brackets for the eaves still remain. The inside of the dome is decorated with cross vaults and tadpole shapes surrounding the circle designs at the top. This building is currently in use as an office for residential housing development, and its interior has completely changed.
