Nairobi, Kenya's largest and capital city, is situated in the southwest part of the country on the Nairobi River.  The city was established in 1899 as a supply depot for the Ugandan railroad.  The city grew rapidly, and in 1905 it became the capital of the British Protectorate.  It continued as the capital city after independence in 1963.
