The brief for this office building located on the bank of the Goksu River asked the architect to to combine a traditional wooden building with preservation restrictions and a dilapidated concrete building into one office-building, and in the process, create an original architectural language. The solution is a building that responds to the exterior appearance of the traditional building and the structure of the other. Consisting of two-storeys, the new structure extends across and beyond the existing buildings in the form of a balcony to create courtyards on either side of the existing buildings. on the river-facing façade. The Senan House is a private holiday home built in the tiny village of Yahsibey, beside Dikili, on the Aegean coast, 90 kilometres north of Izmir. In its use of local labour and traditional techniques and building materials, the project is contextually harmonious with the organic urban fabric and vernacular houses of the village. Following the main morphology, form, structure and components of the hayat Turkish house type, the residence is composed of one multifunctional volume, divided horizontally into two levels. A central void influences the different spaces and functions. The inside and outside only seem to intersect on the south side where the grand opening of the house faces the garden and the pool. On a large plot of 700 square metres, a clearly defined rectangular cubic volume on 96 square metres was erected on the most northerly part of the land. The volume from the inside of the building is an open-functioning single space; a barn-like impression prevails. In spite of being a single volume, in reality and atmospherically, the house is divided horizontally into two levels. The upper level is divided into two spaces for sleeping, which resembles the musandira (gallery) element in the room of a hayat Turkish house. The ground floor contains an open, multi-functional space, with an open-plan kitchen and a separate small bathroom behind the kitchen. The two floors make a total of 160 square metres. A large void in the middle of the house connects the two storeys visually while giving focus and accentuation to the inside volume. Reinforcing this axial focus, the house opens onto the garden only from this void by means of a grand southern opening that covers the entire long side of the rectangular plan and extends to the full height of the house. In the middle of the opening, abutting it, a long clear rectangular pool, one metre deep, stretches to the south. The inside and the outside only seem to interact at the point of this grand opening. Following the construction of a private stone house for Emre Senan, a well-known graphic designer, the architect Nevzat Sayin has in the last decade designed several more houses using local stone in the small village of Yahsibey adjacent to the town of Dikili near Izmir. The stone facades are in harmony with the general style of the village, and yet are modern interpretations of the village's traditional building typologies. This is part of a wider programme to transform the Ottoman Empire’s first power plant, operational from 1910 to 1984, into university facilities. The boiler rooms were demolished in the late 1980s but the centre refers to them in its identical size and structure: a reinforced concrete base and core with steel shell. The building’s bulk is, however, diffused by its cladding of perforated sheet metal, giving it a cloud-like appearance that suggests the ghostly presence of the former building. The perforations also open the interior to light and views, so that it is not isolated from its environment, while allowing light to spill out at night. Source: The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, 2011.

An unfinished industrial building was completed to house the office and production components of a printing concern. The original building was constructed of reinforced concrete. Steel was selected for reinforcement and extensions to the building. The ventilation system is prominently displayed. A geometric pattern of colored panes are attached to the front. The building accommodates the fixed in-place machines of the production facility and the flexible open space of the administrative offices, and provides a shared entrance and canteen. Designed as an office building and currently being utilised as a university, the structure underscores the client’s objective, and the architect’s goal, of creating a building that is adaptable to a wide variety of uses. Situated on the hills overlooking the Bosphorus, and built of conventional reinforced concrete it is a massive block much larger than its neighbors. However, it is not perceived as such by the passers-by, as only its narrow side is visible from the roadway. Welcome to ARCHNET, an open access, interdisciplinary, intellectual resource focused on the built environment of Muslim societies.Focused on the built environment of Islamic civilizations past and present, we seek to:<ul><li>Facilitate excellence in scholarship and professional work by&nbsp;providing reliable information and ready access&nbsp;to vetted, high-quality textual and multimedia resources&nbsp;focused on architecture, urbanism, environmental and landscape design,&nbsp;heritage&nbsp;conservation, economic and environmental sustainability, community development and resilience in the face of rapid change, and related topics.</li><li>Enable teaching and learning in these domains by providing educators with reliable, effective pedagogical material and teaching aids.&nbsp;</li><li>Serve as a platform through which scholars, practitioners, and institutions can bring their work to new global audiences.&nbsp;</li><li>Promote intercultural understanding and dialogue through reliable, high-quality, peer-reviewed material on the diversity of and pluralism within Muslim societies and the interaction between Islamic and other religious, cultural, and philosophical traditions as it relates to architecture and urbanism.</li><li>Enable easy access to a wide variety of resources via a custom-built, web-based, mobile-friendly platform optimized to minimize financial, infrastructural, linguistic, and other barriers to access.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>Launched in 2002 after several years of development, ARCHNET is a pioneering digital resource that has proven a reliable authority on the built environment of Muslim societies, past and present.&nbsp;ARCHNET is a partnership between the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/1342" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Documentation Center, MIT Libraries</a> (AKDC@MIT) and the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/1903" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Trust for Culture</a> (AKTC), with support from the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/50" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture</a> at Harvard and MIT.&nbsp;ARCHNET is developed and maintained by <a href="https://www.performantsoftware.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Performant Software Solutions</a>.
