Jami' al-Qasba is next to the&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/8457" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dar El Makhzen</a>, and its primary entrance is on rue Ibn Abbou.&nbsp;The mosque was constructed by&nbsp;<a href="about:blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ali Bin Abdullah al-Riffi</a>&nbsp;during the reign of&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/authorities/2721" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Moulay Ismail Ibn Sharif</a>&nbsp;(r. 1672-1727/1083-1139 AH) after the rebuilding of Tangier following the bombardment by the evacuating English forces in 1684.&nbsp;Significant repairs were made to the structure by Mohammed IV (r. 1859-1873/1259-1290 AH) who enlarged the prayer room, and it was restored again for the visit of Hassan I (r. 1873-1894/1290-1311 AH) in 1889.&nbsp; The entrance is framed by a large horseshoe arch decorated with elaborate zellij that is visible for the first time since ca. 1921.&nbsp;As Naïma El-Khatib Boujibar has stated in "The Ports of the Strait" from Andalusian Morocco, it was then&nbsp;<blockquote>that a nadir of the habous, the regional representative of the endowment administration, had the idea of covering the decorations with&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8464/media_contents/90743" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">unfortunate colors</a>. (p. 198)</blockquote>It's most notable feature is the&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8464/media_contents/90739" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">minaret</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;The mosque is one of very few in Morocco with an octagonal, rather than square minaret.&nbsp;Crenelated at the summit, and elaborately decorated with carved stucco, and a mosaic pattern in green, yellow, and blue tiles, the minaret was most likely built by Ali's successor, Pasha Ahmed, who was responsible for a number of octagonal minarets in the Rif region of Morocco.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Recently the mosque underwent a major renovation that took over a year.&nbsp;It will reopen in early June 2015.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; -<a href="https://archnet.org/authorities/2691" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Michael A. For organizational purposes, this site refers to the original city of Tangier that was surrounded by the old walls, as seen in&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/media_contents/97147" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the map</a>&nbsp;published in Tanger Et Sa Zone, the seventh volume of&nbsp;Villes Et Tribus du Maroc. Though the walls have changed over time, in today's terms this is roughly the area bounded by&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/10121" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">rue du Portugal</a>, rue de la Plage, rue d'Italie which becomes rue de la Kasbah, ultimately leading to&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/15605" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Borj Ben Amar</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/10580" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Borj Na'am</a>. The wall on the north side of&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/10428" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">rue Riad Sultan</a>&nbsp;is the northern border along the cliff, and it once continued through to Borj Dar el-Baroud.&nbsp;Only portions of the eastern wall still exist, but the boundary is easily defined, running between the area containing the&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/9189" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Customs House</a>&nbsp;and Port and, proceeding from the north to the south, the&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/9188" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hotel Continental</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/9589" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Borj al-Salaam</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/9060" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Borj al-Hajaoui</a>&nbsp;(the terrace in front of the&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/6353" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Great Mosque</a>), and ending the circle at the square where&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/14901" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bab Dar Dbagh</a>&nbsp;meets&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/10121" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">rue du Portugal</a>.&nbsp; Though&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/8455" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the Kasbah</a>&nbsp;was walled off from the rest of the medina, it is within the city walls, and thus considered part of the medina, as well as district unto itself.&nbsp;So again, for organizational purposes, the constituent elements of the Kasbah are listed on the site record for the Kasbah, but not associated directly with this record. Until the late 19th c. the history of Tangier is, essentially, the history of the medina, including the Kasbah. In recent years a great deal of research has been done on the walls of the Tangier medina, most notably represented by the massive volume&nbsp;Portuguese TangierPortuguese Tangier (1471-1662): Colonial Urban Fabric as Cross-Cultural Skeleton.&nbsp;In this book, Martin Elbi combines a great deal of archival research and archeological evidence, and contemporary mapping technologies to ascertain the location of the Portuguese fortifications in relation to later construction.&nbsp;There have also been rehabilitation and even reconstruction projects such as the rebuilding of the collapsed&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/9939" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bab al-Bahar</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/9934" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Qal'a</a>&nbsp;on the&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/sites/9071" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Place de Mechouar</a>, aka Place de la Kasbah. Bab al-Assa 

This gate at the southeast end of <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/10471" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Place du Mechouar</a> exits the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/8455" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Qasba</a> where the eastern edge of the Jnan Kaptan neighborhood meets the western edge of Dar Baroud. The name means "Gate of Beatings," because prisoners were beaten as the passed through the gate on the way to and from the prison on the square.&nbsp;Between the inner and outer gates is a beautiful, elaborately decorated bench.

Dar al-Mandub

The building was constructed on 4 hectares (10 acres) in 1929 by the Mendoub Mohamed Tazi.&nbsp; In 1970 it was bought by the American publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes who transformed it into a museum featuring miniature reenactments of major battles from history.&nbsp; After the death of Malcom Forbes in 1990, the museum was closed.&nbsp; According to Juan Ramón Roca, the structure is now used as a "VIP residence for guest of the (Royal) Palace."<super>1 --Michael A. Dar a-Makhzen is on the east side of the Cashah.&nbsp;Some historians have maintained that throughout recorded history a fortress has existed on or near the site, certainly since Portuguese rule (1471-1661). An inscription in the interior attributes the current structure to Pasha Ahmed Ben Ali al-Rifi in 1151 AH (1737).&nbsp;The palace complex that includes a <a href="http://archnet.org/sites/9932" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">treasury</a>, a <a href="https://www.archnet.org/admin/sites/9933/edit" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">prison</a>, <a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8464" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">a mosque</a>, and multiple residential structures. Restorations were carried out in 1889 when Hassan I visited Tangier after making it the diplomatic capital, and the residence of European diplomats.&nbsp;In 1922 the main palace became a museum. a function that continues today. In recent years the complex what again renovated, reopening to the public in 2016. The main residence consists of 7 rooms and a protico arranged around a central courtyard with zelij flooring and a marble fountain in the center. The columns were produced in Italy.&nbsp;The two main rooms off the courtyard have domed ceilings carved with muqarnas.&nbsp;The walls are decorated with mosaics and carved stucco.&nbsp;The Bit al-Mal, often referred to at the treasury, is a ceremonial hall with large horseshoe doors that open onto the square.&nbsp;&nbsp; An adjoining building, Dar Chorfa, currently houses the archeological museum.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sources: Lakhdar, Kamal . Avenue d'Alexandrie

This opulent building in the northern part of the the San Francisco District on rue Benchimol was vonstructed in 1912 by Moulay Hafid after he abdicated power and took up residence in Tangier. Though still referred to by many as Moulay Hafid's Palace, he was unable to take up residence there before being forced into exile altogether.&nbsp;In 1922 it was acquired by the Italian government to establish the Palazzo dell Instituzzioni Italiane.&nbsp; It was part of a large complex that included a hospital, restaurant, library, and other activities, located between Rue Ibn Hazm and Rue de Bourrakla the the north and south, and Rue Moulay Idriss and Rue Benchimol to the west and east.&nbsp; SOURCES: Roca, Juan Ramón. This area above the Customs House is now the car park for the Hotel Continental, but it once housed a battery of 29 canons pointed toward the sea. &nbsp;The canons date back to the Portuguese era, and have now been placed around the city. &nbsp;It was known as the Borj al-Salam until 1790, when it became known as Bordj Ben Allal, and in 1865 as Bordj Chachou. According to the page on the Borj in the Inventaire et Documentation du Patrimoine Culturel du Maroc, they are the names of the Qaïds that commanded the battery. &nbsp;<div> </div><div>SOURCES:&nbsp;</div><div>"Borj Es-Salam." Tangier

The Great Mosque of Tangier is a nineteenth-century construction that stands in what was once the center of the medina of Tangier. The site of the mosque was formerly the home of several significant religious buildings from various civilizations that previously occupied Tangier, dating back originally to a fifth century Roman church. After the Muslim conquest of Tangier in the eighth century, the church was converted to a mosque by the <a href="http://archnet.org/timelines/48/period/Marinid/year/1310" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Marinid Dynasty</a> and remained so until the late fifteenth century. The mosque was replaced by a church during the centuries in which Tangier was under Portuguese and English rule. After Moulay Isma'il recaptured the city for the <a href="http://archnet.org/timelines/48/period/Sharifian/year/1664" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">'Alawi dynasty</a> in 1684, the church was once again transformed into a mosque. Sultan Sulayman completely rebuilt the mosque in 1815 due to its poor physical condition, creating the building that stands in Tangier today. The mosque is rectangular in shape, its longitudinal axis rotated forty-five degrees counter-clockwise from the north-south meridian to account for qibla orientation. It is approximately 34 meters long along its north-south axis and 30 meters wide along its east-west axis. The mosque is bounded by thick exterior walls that structure the hypostyle-type prayer hall and courtyard within. The mosque is divided by arcades into a grid in plan of seven rows by seven columns. The main entry to the mosque is in the center of the northwest elevation of the complex, on axis with the mihrab positioned in the center of the southeast wall. Secondary entrances to the mosque are located in the long northeast and southwest walls on axis with the center of the courtyard. The minaret is located in the northwest corner of the mosque. Upon entering the mosque from the main entry in the northwest wall, the first row of arcades is covered, and interior walls perpendicular to the exterior mosque wall separate the central three bays of the first row from the two outermost bays to each side of the entry. Passing into the second row of arcades, the interior walls framing the entry and the roof both end as the courtyard of the mosque begins. The courtyard is three bays long and three bays wide, or 11 meters wide and 13 meters long, and surrounded by covered arcades on all sides. An ablution fountain is located at the center of the courtyard. Beyond the courtyard is the covered prayer hall, which is seven arcade bays wide and three bays long, or 30 meters wide and 14 meters long. At the point where the central arcade intersects the qibla wall is the mihrab. To the east of the mihrab along the qibla wall are the library and the imam's room, and to the west is the funeral room. All of these rooms are located behind the qibla wall and thus outside of the main footprint of the mosque. The annexed rooms are accessed exclusively through doors in the qibla wall from within the mosque, not from the exterior. The walls of the mosque are covered in white stucco, with green and orange ceramic tiles applied to the surfaces of the portals and the minaret as decoration. The roof of the mosque was similarly completed in green ceramic tile. The main entry to the mosque is monumental in scale, with an opening in the form of a rounded horseshoe arch. The arch is decorated with green ceramic tile up to the level of the impost, after which unadorned white stucco traces the shape of the horseshoe over the opening. The spandrel between the white face of the arch and the green ceramic cornice is decorated with intricate orange and green tilework forming geometric patterns. A projecting second cornice extends the green tile roof out over the sidewalk and the two steps that lead up to the arched threshold, creating a shallow porch at the point of entry into the mosque. The minaret contains similar decorative motifs, also incorporating green and orange ceramic tilework into the faces of its square main shaft. The main shaft, with a square plan of approximately four meters by four meters, rises to four-fifths of the height of the minaret, and is capped by stepped merlons. At the level of the merlons, an open air gallery surrounds a second smaller square shaft that rises one fifth of the total height of the minaret, culminating in a pyramidal cupola and a metal finial. This structure and proportion is typical of 'Alawi minarets in Morocco. The brick minaret is completely covered in white stucco, except where the colorful tilework is inset on each elevation. The tilework is used as in infill into the blind arcades that are defined in relief on each level of the shaft. Openings that penetrate into the interior of the minaret only occur on the third and fifth levels of the structure, and even they are mediated by stucco screens with a small-scale lozenge pattern as to appear a continuation of the geometric patterns found in the tilework of larger blind arcades. The mosque was socially significant in the nineteenth century as an urban hub, due to its central location near to the inner market of the medina, and the variety of services that it provided to the city. Extensions of the mosque built across the street from the main structure contained a hospital for the mentally ill, the house of the Qadi where court was held, two schools, and a house for washing the dead. Creating spaces for these programs in the immediate area of the mosque allowed the mosque to become a locus of social change as well as a place of worship. After the occupation of Morocco by the French in the early 20th century, the Great Mosque of Tangier declined in cultural importance. In the 1920s, the French constructed a nouvelle ville (colonial town) in Tangier that relocated the city center away from the Great Mosque, relegating it to a position of historical, but no longer civic, significance. Box 1 - International Tangier

This collection currently contains approximately 2,000 images of the western Mediterranean, and particularly&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/authorities/3987" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tangier</a>, Morocco, during the period in which the city truly was an International Zone.&nbsp;The images are&nbsp;believed to be the work of Spanish photographer and longtime resident of Tangier,&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/authorities/2852" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Servant</a>.&nbsp;They document the city and multiple other locations in the region approximately between the last years of the 19th century and the 1930s. They are scanned from a large collection of medium-format, glass plate negatives in the collection of the Tangier American Institute for Moroccan Studies (<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8271" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">TALIM</a>).&nbsp;The images of Morocco,&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/collections/900" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">France</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/collections/805" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Spain</a>, <a href="#" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Algeria</a>, <a href="#" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gibraltar</a>, and other places, provide important and rare visual documentation of these places between the First and Second World Wars, when nearly every aspect of society was in flux. Tangier is particularly well documented. Images capture the arrival of Europeans in the port, construction of the railway, some of the city's best-known buildings, and a wide variety of the city's inhabitants, Moroccan and European,&nbsp;civilian and military. With the help of multiple institutions,1&nbsp;most recently the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wellesley.edu/mes#zSTCL0sb5iRCEj21.97" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Program in Middle Eastern Studies</a>&nbsp;and the Center for Work and Service of Wellesley College, the entire collection is now digitized and catalogued to the best degree possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; For reasons explained in the fuller history of the collection, many images are only partially identified, and some may even be misidentified. Welcome to ARCHNET, an open access, interdisciplinary, intellectual resource focused on the built environment of Muslim societies.Focused on the built environment of Islamic civilizations past and present, we seek to:<ul><li>Facilitate excellence in scholarship and professional work by&nbsp;providing reliable information and ready access&nbsp;to vetted, high-quality textual and multimedia resources&nbsp;focused on architecture, urbanism, environmental and landscape design,&nbsp;heritage&nbsp;conservation, economic and environmental sustainability, community development and resilience in the face of rapid change, and related topics.</li><li>Enable teaching and learning in these domains by providing educators with reliable, effective pedagogical material and teaching aids.&nbsp;</li><li>Serve as a platform through which scholars, practitioners, and institutions can bring their work to new global audiences.&nbsp;</li><li>Promote intercultural understanding and dialogue through reliable, high-quality, peer-reviewed material on the diversity of and pluralism within Muslim societies and the interaction between Islamic and other religious, cultural, and philosophical traditions as it relates to architecture and urbanism.</li><li>Enable easy access to a wide variety of resources via a custom-built, web-based, mobile-friendly platform optimized to minimize financial, infrastructural, linguistic, and other barriers to access.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>Launched in 2002 after several years of development, ARCHNET is a pioneering digital resource that has proven a reliable authority on the built environment of Muslim societies, past and present.&nbsp;ARCHNET is a partnership between the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/1342" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Documentation Center, MIT Libraries</a> (AKDC@MIT) and the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/1903" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Trust for Culture</a> (AKTC), with support from the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/50" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture</a> at Harvard and MIT.&nbsp;ARCHNET is developed and maintained by <a href="https://www.performantsoftware.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Performant Software Solutions</a>.
