Delivered at: The Roundtable Symposium On The Planning Of Cairo and Its Architecture
In his introductory address at the symposium Fathy discusses the historical identity of Cairo and the contributions of the historical dynasties, Fatimid, Mamluk, Ottoman, which helped in forming it. Rather than describing the different styles of these dynasties as an ever-changing identity, but rather he suggests that the historical buildings of Fustat, Fatimid, and Mamluk Cairo are all bound by a single soul which is characterized by transformation and transposition. He asserts that Cairo's historical past, its intellectual character, as well as principles of modern architecture should be referenced in the future planning of Cairo.
