Gidan Makama Museum
Kano, Nigeria

The Gidan Makama Museum also known as Kano museum is located in Kano, Nigeria was built as a residential complex by  Emir Abdullahi Burja for his grandson. The subsequent Makama’s continued to use the complex as their official residence.

After the British invasion of Kano in 1903, the building was used as an office for the colonial officers, On April 23rd 1959, the Gidan Makama was declared a monument and, in 1968 a National Museum. 

It is constructed using the following materials:
  • Earth (Birji) and clay.
  • Beam and stick (Azara). 
  • Corn stalk and thatch.
  • Motar (Tubali) 
  • Water for mixing.
  • Plaster (Chafe).
  • Stone (Marmara).
  • Reeds and Grasses. 
  • Rope, corn mat (Asabari)
  • Whitewash/red ear.
