1959-62 Survey

Called Dū Sīṛhīyā Gumbad. Located approximately 800 m west of the Tomb of Humāyūn, about 50 m south of Lodī Road. Grid ref. I-9

This is a domed building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west interior wall, and entrances on the other three sides. On the east exterior wall, traces of oriel windows can be seen on either side of the entrance; on the inside of the entrance, there are two staircases leading up to the windows. The popular name Dū Sīṛhīyā Gumbad (Domed Building with Two Staircases) probably comes from this feature.

This building is now used as a residence, but traces of one tomb can still be seen. Period III.

(Paragraphs 2nd, 3rd, and 4th from the 2015-18 Survey is translated using Google Translate)

[Plan] According to the Monuments of Delhi, the exterior dimensions are 6.6m square. It is a wall-type dome building with openings on three sides, with a mihrab on the west.

[Exterior] The centers of all four sides protrude. On the east side, a bay window is located within a frame surrounding the opening. The central protrusion is slightly higher than the sides, and beams and columns are used within the arch at the opening. A crown ornament surrounds the wall and drum, and a bell-shaped dome is placed on top, with large lotus petals at the top.

[Interior] Squinch arches form an octagon, which is then completed by 16 arches to form a 16-agon, with the dome resting on an even lower series of 32 arches. Arches are cut on both sides of the opening arch. Arches of the same height are used for the mihrab, with a segmented arch at the top center. The arches and spandrels have large medallions and are decorated with reliefs. When converting from a square to an octagon, or from an octagon to a 16-gon, corbels made of overlapping cubes are used on both ends of the semi-dome of the mihrab. Stairs are carved into the walls on both ends of the central opening on the east side, and light is let in through bay windows.
