The mosque at Ouara, capital of the OuaddaI Sultanate, was constructed with red brick. The exterior walls are nearly 1 m thick and form a square measuring 27 x 27 m. The prayer hall is divided into seven 2.4 m wide aisles by five rows of rectangular double pillars. Constructed in the 17th century, some rectangular baked bricks at the site are imprinted with the Hijri date 1211 (1796) and the symbols of the brick-makers, suggesting that part of the mosque was renovated at the end of the eighteenth century. The qibla wall faced directly east. A mihrab niche protruded from the center of the wall and a hexagonal minaret, originally 12 m tall, from the northern end.
