The structure houses exhibitions of Turkish art and culture in an attempt to disseminate Turkish-Islamic traditions to a Japanese audience. The architect has tried to synthesise Ottoman architectural vocabulary with Japanese accents. The embassy complex consists of four structures: a two-storey ambassador's residence organised around a central court, a three-storey L-shaped chancellery building which faces a reflecting pond, a three-storey 24 unit staff housing building, and seven units of service staff housing. The Department of Chemistry building sits at the western end of the Institute of Technology campus and has three distinct parts. A central atrium is flanked by classrooms and administrative spaces on one side, and laboratories on the other side. A curved space frame covers the atrium. The headquarters of Turkey's National Action Party 'strike a sensitive balance between the old and the new, in keeping with the party's political philosophy'. Elements of the old are to be found in the 'Seljuk-style' entrance portal, or in the Ottoman-inspired cupola of the Presidential Pavilion. The new resides in the high-tech construction. The facades of the reinforced concrete structure are finished in vertically striated, glass-reinforced precast concrete panels and in 'liquid plastic'. Alongside the administrative offices, the complex contains a range of social and cultural spaces, including a museum, café and library, which are designed to draw in the public. Malatya City Hall comprises three clearly defined but interlocking parts. The main block is a ten storey, double-skinned ellipse containing arcs of office space around a central atrium. A five floor circular mayoral block looks out over a plaza to the front and the atrium to the rear, while a spiral shaped city council room and multifunctional hall below also both open onto the atrium. Traversed by a meridian-like path across the site, the atrium provides views and access to all parts of the complex, bringing transparency and spatial continuity, as well as providing a social and cultural meeting point for the city’s inhabitants. The European shoreline of the Bosphorus is subject to strict building controls: as a rule, only renovation is allowed. Hence this rebuilding of a timber-clad house that burned down many years ago. The reconstruction was based on aerial views, survey maps, remnants of the original foundations, and column fragments. The structure is reinforced concrete with brick infill.
