Designed for the architect, the house is characterised by a sense of warmth, simple space programming, and consideration for its wooded suburban context. Its design is inspired by Indonesian vernacular stilt houses, which favour natural ventilation. The ground floor, which is partially excavated down to street level, incorporates a giant pool, library and services. The entrance ramp continues up to the open-plan first-floor communal area, with its long wooden table and pool, and to the bedrooms above. There is also an internal spiral staircase. The materials are exposed concrete and reused ironwood from the docks. Walls are minimised and windows kept simple for a seamless interior-to-exterior relationship. The new two-storey rendered house stands on the site of a previous dwelling, now demolished. The surrounding wall was left untouched to contrast with the new white building. The main facade does not reveal an entrance. Access is gained through a service entrance to the left and the main entrance to the right past a small garden space. The steel framed sliding doors of the entrance maximise natural light internally. A limited budget has created innovative space planning and design solutions. Displaying a mixture of classical Empire and indigenous Indonesian styles, the building was erected in stages between 1911 and 1937. Its restoration was a pilot conservation project for Bank Indonesia, which owns a number of historic premises. A maximum-retention, minimum-intervention approach was adopted. Extensive research and analysis was carried out to identify structural problems and original materials. Identical materials and techniques were used for the conservation work, creating business opportunities for traditional craftsmen and supporting the transfer of skills to a new generation. The process was fully recorded through descriptions, photographs and technical drawings, enabling it to be used as a reference point for future projects. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980. This government-assisted, self-help community planning programme provides three levels of infrastructure: paved access roads, bridges and footpaths; water supply, sanitation and drainage canals; schools and health clinics. These improvements are threaded along existing rights-of-way, with little disturbance to the existing housing. Although the programme does not offer direct housing assistance, the improved access, flood control and increased economic activity within the kampungs has stimulated home improvement. At the time the award was given, 450'000 kampung dwellers were benefiting from the new infrastructure at a cost of US$ 60 per capita. From the jury citation: "[the programme] has improved living conditions, helped to integrate the informal sector with the city economy and encouraged individual initiative in the improvement of housing." Jakarta’s high land costs have pushed younger generations to the suburbs, with commutes affecting quality of life and creating traffic jams. A model for addressing that problem, this house, built on a 3.5-by-17-metre brownfield site in a dense neighbourhood, employs a sustainable, cost-efficient construction system and ingenious space-saving design to offer an affordable, compact dwelling with rich experiences. Integration between furniture modules and functions such as stairs and activities creates a clutter-free interior, with innovative plugin systems installed. The ground floor accommodates the master bedroom, the first floor a living-dining-kitchen and laundry, the second the architect-owner’s son’s bedroom/play/study space. A roof terrace offers views. The sloping west-facing facade made of perforated steel and polycarbonate filters sunlight, and skylights create dramatic daylight effects across all floors. Structurally insulated prefabricated superfoam panels for walls reduce heat and noise. The family can now access all their activities within 5 kilometres or 15 minutes. Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1986. Named after the donor of the land it occupies, the mosque was designed in the Indonesian Hindu-Javanese architectural tradition, yet is well adapted to the Muslim form of worship. The mosque is square in plan, and symmetrical on both axes with deep verandas on all four sides. The upper tier of the two-tiered roof forms a lantern that filters daylight through patterned painted glass along its ridges. The space between the two tiers has been left open for ventilating the prayer hall. If the design conformed strictly to tradition, four interior wood columns would support the higher of the two roofs. To achieve an uninterrupted column-free space for worship, and clear view of the mihrab, these columns were eliminated. The wide spans thus produced required that the double roof be steel framed. This use of contemporary technology is carefully concealed on the interior by wood strips and sheathing, and on the exterior by clay tiles. The roof is well designed for heavy rain and the deep verandas protect the interior from rain and excessive glare. In this mosque, traditional Javanese idioms have been skillfully reinterpreted to produce a modern regional architecture compatible with the best indigenous work. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture

A pilot project initially for six different communities in Jakarta, each space provides a library and a multipurpose room, a children’s healthcare clinic and nursery, and a family welfare clinic, as well as outdoor amphitheatres, medicinal gardens, fish ponds, open green areas, and toilet facilities. Each of the six projects was designed in collaboration with local residents to determine exact needs; all employ simple, inexpensive, locally-available materials and plants, and with limited, minimal budgets. The first six pilot projects were so successful that 127 more were undertaken throughout Jakarta in phases during the subsequent three years through 2017, all by younger practitioners identified and invited by the original architects.

After fish landing and auction activities moved elsewhere in 1977, the heritage building that formerly housed them was subject to mostly informal uses and its structure deteriorated and partially collapsed. Built in 1631 by Dutch architects on the delta at the entrance of what was then the Dutch East Indies’ capital, it stands near other heritage buildings. Its form had changed through three generations, the last dating from about 1945. Asked to reinstate its original construction and explore adaptive reuse options, the architects proposed it becoming an educational and commercial space to support Jakarta’s tourism destinations. The same materials as the original were used wherever possible. New wood followed the original species choice: ironwood and dammar laut. The space is divided into commercial, education, and building conservation zones. The architects collaborated in designing the displays. After informal settlements had become linked to flooding, the low-income community of this riverside kampung cluster, dating back to the 1960s, was threatened with eviction. At the same time, the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights announced a call for proposals for a settlement improvement grant. Needing to compete with the government’s concept of a 15-metre riverbank clearance for an "inspection road", the community engaged with architects and academics. The resulting participative master plan, which won the funding, involved removing houses from riverside roads to create a linear community garden; renovating 127 house facades; installing a collective septic tank; and building a multi-family pilot house. A statement of what is possible for such a community enterprise, the pilot house has a concrete frame and brickwork infill at ground level, bamboo frames with thatch infill above, and PVC sheet roofing - all affordable, locally available materials that present the opportunity of working together. A private project for a 3-bedroom house with design studio evolved into a public-oriented one to promote architectural learning. The flexibly planned main building incorporates an architecture-focused general library, classroom/exhibition space, materials library, 60-capacity indoor lecture room and 200-capacity lecture amphitheatre, with one-bedroom accommodation above. A football field for safe outdoor play - rare in Jakarta - separates this from a freestanding, easily relocatable children’s library. The main building’s roof is inspired by Javanese traditional architecture, with pyramidal skylights that draw warm air upwards. North-south orientation further enhances thermal comfort. Providing openness in a dense zone, greened outdoor areas are irrigated by harvested rainwater from a rooftop tub that also supplies fish for the occupant’s consumption and flushing water for toilets.&nbsp; Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture
