The project is a small, suburban clinic for pre-natal and paediatric care, as part of the Voltaic government's project to provide rural communities with health facilities. Compact and closed to the outside for both functional and climatic requirements, the 120 m2 center is organised around a small, landscaped patio, which provides natural daylight and ventilation. Mud-brick domes cover the rooms square or rectangular in plan, with flat, mud roofs on beds of teak branches. Mud-brick bearing walls are very thick, and rest on concrete foundations. The whole is rendered in earth-lime plaster, and much use is made of brightly coloured wall painting. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture

The design brief requested a single building where 13 different faculties of engineering could be combined in a cross-disciplinary environment, providing students with the opportunity to network and socialise with each other.&nbsp;The resulting Science and Technology Centre includes four separate building units joined together with two internal sunken courtyards and an internal atrium. The complex offers 22 classrooms and 33 research and education laboratories -- a space totalling approximately 16,000 m2. Multi-purpose classrooms were strategically located at the ground level. The Administration, Faculty and IT Laboratories were located on the first floor, whilst specialist experimental labs were situated at the lower ground level.&nbsp;The environmental context, such as solar radiation and wind, has also been taken into consideration. Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1992.<div> </div><div>In 1978 the Panafrican Institute for Development (PID) commissioned the Association pour le Développement d'une Architecture et d'un Urbanisme Africains (ADAUA) to design and build the future campus of the PID in the Sahel, at Ouagadougou. Founded in 1965, the PID is an international African organisation whose goal is to promote integrated, participatory development among the rural and urban populations of sub-Saharan Africa. It is a non-profit organisation without governmental support. The ADAUA, founded in 1975, is composed of about 40 architects, engineers, economists and managers, most of them African, who build in poorer areas. The objectives of the PID for development in Africa coincide with those of the ADAUA. In planning the new campus, both organisations wished to demonstrate the creative potential of local materials and their appropriateness to the socio-cultural context and the climate of the Sahel region. They also sought to demonstrate potential applications for local mass housing and indicate the roles the community can play in the building process. The campus structures consist of three distinct groups: nine professors' houses, student lodgings and the teaching centre which includes library and restaurant facilities. The buildings form a dense urban-like fabric, focusing inward around courtyards. The latter, of varying sizes, shaded and often planted, provide privacy, natural ventilation and coolness. The PID is entirely built of stabilised earth bricks. The earth was procured from land approximately 3 kilometres from the building site. The cement used for stabilisation (the only imported material) came from Togo. The jury believes the PID to represent "one of the most impressive contemporary realisations in stabilised mud brick in Africa. It is a modern work that makes use of improved inexpensive materials and intermediate building technologies, a good example of architectural ingenuity and technical virtuosity." CREPA is an organisation concerned with the low-cost provision of safe and clean water. It brings together 17 member states in Africa, from Benin and Burkina Faso to Senegal and Togo. This complex, sited in a diplomatic enclave, provides an administrative headquarters as well as a research centre. It has four components: main building (containing offices, meeting rooms, archives, library and cafeteria), training centre, guard-post and enclosing wall. The principal construction materials are compressed earth blocks, sand-cement tiles and red wood, treated against insects. Source: Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Regional Centre for Low-Cost Water Treatment

The training center is situated in the downtown area of the capital of Upper Volta. Imposed by the clients to be near their HQs, the site lies within a courtyard formed by two existing buildings and party wall. The rectangular plan distinctly expresses the two programmatic functions: - the public teaching centre, a large classroom comprising three equal, vaulted bays; and - three private administrative offices, and the semi-public library and archive. Simple, easily-learned construction techniques are employed for all dome, vault, and arch structures. Earth is the principal building material that had been exploited due to its qualities of thermal insulation, compresive strength, low cost, and easily-available abundance. Set in one of the poorest suburbs of Ouagadougou, the CBF Women’s Centre provides health and educational services and builds awareness about women’s rights. The building consists mainly of two separate but closely-related blocks. A number of passive cooling measures reduce the need for air conditioning and provide a prototype that can be replicated across the region: the two buildings are raised on a platform to encourage natural ventilation and protect the interiors from dust, mud and humidity; a lightweight PVC canopy on steel trees shades the whole; and exterior openings are fitted with glass louvres. Constructed from interlocking, compressed, soil-cement bricks made on-site, the centre has its own well and photovoltaic cells. Not only does the Centre provide health care, training and education, it also provides a gathering place for the community, somewhere to share ideas and hold celebrations. Welcome to ARCHNET, an open access, interdisciplinary, intellectual resource focused on the built environment of Muslim societies.Focused on the built environment of Islamic civilizations past and present, we seek to:<ul><li>Facilitate excellence in scholarship and professional work by&nbsp;providing reliable information and ready access&nbsp;to vetted, high-quality textual and multimedia resources&nbsp;focused on architecture, urbanism, environmental and landscape design,&nbsp;heritage&nbsp;conservation, economic and environmental sustainability, community development and resilience in the face of rapid change, and related topics.</li><li>Enable teaching and learning in these domains by providing educators with reliable, effective pedagogical material and teaching aids.&nbsp;</li><li>Serve as a platform through which scholars, practitioners, and institutions can bring their work to new global audiences.&nbsp;</li><li>Promote intercultural understanding and dialogue through reliable, high-quality, peer-reviewed material on the diversity of and pluralism within Muslim societies and the interaction between Islamic and other religious, cultural, and philosophical traditions as it relates to architecture and urbanism.</li><li>Enable easy access to a wide variety of resources via a custom-built, web-based, mobile-friendly platform optimized to minimize financial, infrastructural, linguistic, and other barriers to access.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>Launched in 2002 after several years of development, ARCHNET is a pioneering digital resource that has proven a reliable authority on the built environment of Muslim societies, past and present.&nbsp;ARCHNET is a partnership between the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/1342" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Documentation Center, MIT Libraries</a> (AKDC@MIT) and the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/1903" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Trust for Culture</a> (AKTC), with support from the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/collections/50" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture</a> at Harvard and MIT.&nbsp;ARCHNET is developed and maintained by <a href="https://www.performantsoftware.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Performant Software Solutions</a>.
