Pakistan

The Alamgiri Darwaza, or Alamgiri Gate, was built under the patronage of Awrangzib (1658-1707). It is situated on the eastern edge of the Lahore Fort, and leads by way of a sharply angled passage, to the large courtyard of the Diwan-i-Amm, the most public area of the fort's administrative areas. The gate is characterized by what some have called a 'softening' of the Mughal style in its later years: the fluted towers flanking it rise out of carved lotus buds, and are topped by small kiosks. <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/2858" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Asaf Khan</a> (d. 1641) was the brother of<a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/2613" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Nur Jahan</a>, <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/2641" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jahangir</a>'s wife, and wazir to the same emperor. His daughter, <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/2644" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mumtaz Mahal</a>, was married to <a href="https://www.archnet.org/authorities/2591" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shah Jahan</a>. His tomb, commissioned by Shah Jahan, is built to the west of <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/1747" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jahangir's mausoleum</a>, facing it, in the same enclosure of Shahdara, near the city of Lahore. It stands on a platform faced in red sandstone, with a reservoir of water at each corner. The tomb is an example of the 'subsidiary tomb' type: built entirely of brick, it is a one-story regular octagon, with a large central double-layered bulbous dome. Each side has a deeply recessed iwan, or alcove, with a door and arched window looking into the tomb. Marble, and blue kashi tiles typical of Lahore once covered the mausoleum; they have since been stripped off. The interior was renowned for its lavish use of white marble and precious stone inlay, which have been removed and reused in local temples. The inner dome ceiling is decorated in a high plaster relief of interlacing patterns. The tomb still contains the marble sarcophagus, carved with Koranic inscriptions. Considered one of the last great monuments of the Mughal period, the mosque remains the largest on the Indian subcontinent. It is adjacent to the western wall of the Lahore Fort, and was commissioned by Emperor Awrangzib (1658-1707) to house a number of relics of the Prophet. The scheme is based upon that of the Jami Masjid of Shahjahanabad, Delhi, and uses similar materials --red sandstone decorated with white marble-- that depart from the tilework facing typical of Lahore architecture. The mosque stands in a walled enclosure with high minarets at each corner, the whole built upon a high plinth that raises it above the city and Fort. Another set of minarets marks each corner of the mosque itself. The façade is arcaded, with a high central Iran. Three white marble double-domes, the central one slightly larger than the others, complete the composition. The interior is decorated with elaborate floral and cartouche motifs in painted plaster reliefwork, as well as with white marble inlay. Sources: Tillotson, G. H. R. Mughal India, 134. Aga Khan Visual Archive: Pakistan

The Aga Khan Visual Archive (AKVA) is a collection of the&nbsp;<a href="https://libraries.mit.edu/akdc/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Documentation Center</a>, MIT Libraries (AKDC@MIT), that consists of over 120,000 slides and digital images of architecture, urbanism, and the built environment of Muslim societies, donated by students and scholars, affiliated with the&nbsp;<a href="http://akpia.mit.edu/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture</a>&nbsp;at MIT, as well as academics, scholars, cultural institutions, and architects from around the world. The images date from the 1970s through the present, and document historic and contemporary sites in the Islamic world, many of which are not documented elsewhere or have changed significantly since their documentation, either through restoration, renovation, or even destruction. The collection began with the foundation of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT and Harvard, and the concurrent establishment of a documentation center to support the research and teaching of its faculty and students. Students who received&nbsp;<a href="http://akpia.mit.edu/travel-grants" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">travel fellowships</a>&nbsp;from the Aga Khan Program to conduct research agreed to duplicate their slides and donate the duplicate copies to the documentation center. Professors and visiting scholars also donated slides of monuments they had taken. The librarians of the documentation center also occasionally purchased sets of slides to supplement the scope of the material. The slides served as illustrations for lectures, books, and other educational materials produced by AKDC@MIT, and formed the seed collection for the Archnet Digital Library, the predecessor to the current version of Archnet that was established in its first form in the late 1990s. Note that only a small representation of the AKVA's contents are currently cataloged on Archnet. In addition to this collection, further selections from the archive can be found at on <a href="https://dome.mit.edu/handle/1721.3/45936" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DOME, the online interface</a> for the digital collections of the MIT Libraries. A complete list of the boxes in this collection, some of which is still awaiting digitization, can be found on <a href="https://archivesspace.mit.edu/repositories/5/archival_objects/354501" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MIT ArchivesSpace</a>. AKDC staff are currently working to digitize and catalog more material from this collection. As is the case for all images on Archnet, material from the Aga Khan Visual Archive is freely available for research or educational use. It may work on older or less common browsers as well. Will my URLs from earlier versions of Archnet still work?Yes, if they are from the version launched in January 2013. As of October 12, 2021, all URLs from the old Archnet have been redirected to ARCHNET.&nbsp;&nbsp;3. These collections provide short introductions for each period, often offering lists of additional resources at the end of the entry. Only the timeline graphic listing the periods along a chronological axis has not migrated.6.
