Consisting of eight lectures, this series, Architecture and Urban Development of the Deccan Sultanates, begins with an overview of the evolution of Indo-Islamic architecture and the manner in which the newly introduced social, cultural, and political ideals and religious beliefs and the existing Indian traditions interacted and shaped the architectural style. This is lecture 2 of a series. In this lecture, you will learn about:

• the brief history and architecture of the Deccan Sultanates with specific references to different dynasties on the south of the Deccan plateau;
• monuments built under the Deccan Sultanates and their historic significance;
• relevance of the particular architectural qualities and characteristics of the Sultanates (Nizam Shahis, Adil Shahis, Imad Shahis, Barid Shahis, Qutb Shahis;
• the principal characteristics of the architecture of the different dynasties.

This series of lectures was prepared in collaboration between the Centre for the Study of Architecture and Cultural Heritage of India, Arabia and Maghreb (ArCHIAM), based at the University of Liverpool, UK, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture Education Programme.
