Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University
Kabul, Afghanistan
This library, covering an area of 1,680 m2 on a 5,600 m2 site, is a two-storey reinforced concrete frame building, with a partially submerged basement, using brick masonry infill and clad in local dressed stone. The internal corridor, main public access, and exhibition spaces are constructed using columns and beams made of cedar. The first floor features a glass-enclosed courtyard, along with several reading rooms. Two staircases access the partially submerged lower ground floor where library staff offices, the stacks and an auditorium are located. Data sharing and exchanges have been initiated through Afghanistan. Spacious lawns to the north and west are bounded by poplar trees and lined with roses, and students meet in groups on the stone benches.
