Built by King Hussein as a memorial to his grandfather Abdullah I, this mosque was completed in 1989. It has a large prayer hall capped with a blue-dome that is 35 m in diameter. The mosque holds up to 7000 worshippers, with a further 3000 in the courtyard. In addition there is a women's section and a Royal Hall. The complex also has an Islamic Museum a shop. It was Jordan's official state mosque until 2006 when the newly built
King Hussein Ben Talal Mosque was so designated.
