Dam at Station Road (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)
New Delhi, India

1959-62 Survey

Called the Dam at Station Road. Located approximately 120 m further along Station Road, which leads from Parade Road to Cantonment. Runs more or less in the north-south direction. Grid ref. E-9

This dam is currently disrupted by Station Road; its southern section eventually bends east and then south again. In this southern section, there is a structure of broken stone and stucco clearly remaining, but not one sluice remains. The north side of the road is covered by a jungle; this section of the dam is badly ruined, and the sluice located approximately 100 m from the road has mostly collapsed. The sluice has water openings running in the east-west direction, but now only two small outlets are visible at two different levels in its south part. On the east side of the sluice is a modern semi-circular barrier that guards the sluice. Immediately to the south of the sluice is a structure adjoining the dam thought to be from the same period, but it is now completely in ruin, except for the entrance and part of the wall. Its original state is unknown, but can be thought to have been used by the ruling classes during hunting and other recreational activities. Period II.

2015-18 Survey

This is located about 100m into Cariappa Marg that branches out from Sardar Patel Marg. Some stonework was found.

(2nd paragraph from the 2015-18 survey has been translated using Google Translate)

The dam runs north-south. During surveys in 1959-62, the dam gate was visible, and photos of the remains of the building located south of it are included below. According to Monuments of Delhi, there were two buildings in the center of the dam. One was a rectangular building measuring 11.1 meters east-west and 5.5 meters north-south, built with rough stone masonry, plastered with stucco, and constructed with cut stone columns. The main room has a curved frame structure, and the western side room has a flat roof made of red sandstone. There are entrances to the building on the north and south sides, and below the entrances there is a drainage ditch running west from a high dam on the east side. The drainage ditch opening on the east side is protected by modern architecture. Near the northern entrance is a later dharan with three arches.

On the south side of Cariappa Marg, the dam's stonework still remains along the boundary of the Delhi Cantonment site. As far as the eye can see from Cariappa Marg, no stonework from the dam can be seen on the grounds of the Army Golf Club (Army Environmental Park and Training Area (AEPTA)) located to the north across Cariappa Marg, or on the Parade Road side of the southern Delhi Cantonment. It is thought that most of the stonework no longer exists. Neither the sluice gate, buildings, drainage dharan nor dharan could be seen.
