Child Daycare and Adult Training Centre

Chimundo, Mozambique

This two-room structure, built by visiting architecture students during a two-week stay, uses low cost materials and technologies to create spaces for computer instruction and English lessons. The bearing structure for the computer room is a reinforced concrete frame filled in with sand-bags and other materials. The south façade of this room benefits from a glass-bottle wall- an inexpensive alternative to windows. The exterior iron roof, ventilated by trusses separating it from an inner straw mat roof, over-hangs to provide shade. Straw mats are used extensively as screens to filter light and dust.
