Bab Al-A'sa

This gate at the southeast end of <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/10471" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Place du Mechouar</a> exits the <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/8455" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Qasba</a> where the eastern edge of the Jnan Kaptan neighborhood meets the western edge of Dar Baroud. The name means "Gate of Beatings," because prisoners were beaten as the passed through the gate on the way to and from the prison on the square.&nbsp;Between the inner and outer gates is a beautiful, elaborately decorated bench.

A Drive Through the Hills

The building was constructed on 4 hectares (10 acres) in 1929 by the Mendoub Mohamed Tazi.&nbsp; In 1970 it was bought by the American publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes who transformed it into a museum featuring miniature reenactments of major battles from history.&nbsp; After the death of Malcom Forbes in 1990, the museum was closed.&nbsp; According to Juan Ramón Roca, the structure is now used as a "VIP residence for guest of the (Royal) Palace."<super>1 --Michael A. The region around Asilah has been inhabited since well before 1500 BC and Phonecian settlements in the area, but the Mulsim city know as Asila dates to the Muslim conquest and the Idrisid dynasty.&nbsp;It 966 the city was reconstructed by the Umayyad Caliph al-Hakim II.&nbsp;In 1471 the Portuguese conquered the city, and it remained European sovereignty until 1691 when it was reconquered by Mulay Isma'il.&nbsp;He built two of the cities mosques, a madrasa and hammam.&nbsp; In the 19th century the city was bombarded by the Austrians in 1829 and the Spanish in 1860.&nbsp;Asilah was also an important fiefdom of the Rifi leader Mulay Ahmad al-Raisuni, who was named Pasha of the region in 1906. Spain occupied Asilah in 1911, and it reverted to Moroccan control with most of northern Morocco when the Protectorate ended in 1956.&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/585" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Restored in 1978</a>, Asilah is a resort town and a major tourist attraction.&nbsp;It is best known for its <a href="http://www.asilahinfo.com/eventcategory/events/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">annual arts festival</a> that attracts major international talent, including graphic artists who use the city's walls as a canvas.&nbsp; SOURCES:Guiguet-Bologne, Philippe. Asilah

Box 5 - International Tangier

This collection currently contains approximately 2,000 images of the western Mediterranean, and particularly&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/authorities/3987" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tangier</a>, Morocco, during the period in which the city truly was an International Zone.&nbsp;The images are&nbsp;believed to be the work of Spanish photographer and longtime resident of Tangier,&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/authorities/2852" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Servant</a>.&nbsp;They document the city and multiple other locations in the region approximately between the last years of the 19th century and the 1930s. They are scanned from a large collection of medium-format, glass plate negatives in the collection of the Tangier American Institute for Moroccan Studies (<a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8271" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">TALIM</a>).&nbsp;The images of Morocco,&nbsp;<a href="http://archnet.org/collections/900" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">France</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://archnet.org/collections/805" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Spain</a>, <a href="#" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Algeria</a>, <a href="#" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gibraltar</a>, and other places, provide important and rare visual documentation of these places between the First and Second World Wars, when nearly every aspect of society was in flux. Tangier is particularly well documented. Images capture the arrival of Europeans in the port, construction of the railway, some of the city's best-known buildings, and a wide variety of the city's inhabitants, Moroccan and European,&nbsp;civilian and military. With the help of multiple institutions,1&nbsp;most recently the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wellesley.edu/mes#zSTCL0sb5iRCEj21.97" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Program in Middle Eastern Studies</a>&nbsp;and the Center for Work and Service of Wellesley College, the entire collection is now digitized and catalogued to the best degree possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; For reasons explained in the fuller history of the collection, many images are only partially identified, and some may even be misidentified. It may work on older or less common browsers as well. Will my URLs from earlier versions of Archnet still work?Yes, if they are from the version launched in January 2013. As of October 12, 2021, all URLs from the old Archnet have been redirected to ARCHNET.&nbsp;&nbsp;3. These collections provide short introductions for each period, often offering lists of additional resources at the end of the entry. Only the timeline graphic listing the periods along a chronological axis has not migrated.6.
